As I said in the video for "Straight" off of Emerge, I went straight in New York. It was the first time in my life that I was completely legal - all of my paperwork was in order, all of my addresses were real. I went on a healing binge. I cleaned up.
And I turned 30. My body and my life changed. I was commuting to my day job on a bicycle across the Brooklyn bridge every day with a basket on the back, carrying my lunch with me rather than eating the ubiquitous pitas and pizzas at nearby delis.
What does it mean to be a musician; or more specifically, a modern, American musician? What about those of us who don't fit the magazine image?
